A dog found in woodland is thought to have been shot dead.

The grey lurcher bitch was found in woodland behind Catherine Street, Pentre, Rhondda, on Monday.

Early veterinary reports suggested the dog, which had a deep wound to its right ear and blood in its mouth, had been shot at close range.

The RSPCA, which is appealing for information, believed the dog may have been led to the scene because string had been attached to its collar.

RSPCA inspector Simon Evans said: "Initial veterinary reports suggest that the dog was shot at close range but we are still trying to establish the type of firearm used.

"We urgently need more information regarding this incident and I would urge anyone who saw something or heard the sound of gun fire in this area to get in touch with us."
